Summary
The Aliso Viejo City Council will introduce a proposal at their public meeting on May 2 to prohibit circuses from displaying wild and exotic animals. It would also ban rodeos and the sale of dogs and cats in pet shops.
According to the meeting agenda, "the purpose of prohibiting circuses with wild and exotic animal performances is to provide protection and prevent exploitation of these animals," based upon information from groups such as the Humane Society of the United States.
The Ordinance would only pertain to traveling shows. Non-traveling activities such as wild animal or reptile shows including snakes, exotic birds and similar animals; pony rides; and farm animal petting zoos are not subject to the proposed Ordinance.
